Introduction
➢ Climate: the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.
➢ It is measured by assessing the patterns of variation in temperature,humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, precipitation, clouds, sunshine etc.
➢ Punjab has Subtropical Monsoon type of climate.
Seasons
➢ Punjab has three regular and two transitional seasons
➢ Regular seasons
○ Summer season
○ Rainy season
○ Winter season
➢ Transitional seasons
○ Autumn
○ Spring
Summer
➢ From mid April to end of June
➢ Loo : hot and dry westerly wind that blows in the months of
May-June
➢ Dust storms
➢ The region has the lowest pressure. Thus forcing south west monsoon to reach this region by end of June
Rainy Season
➢ End of june
➢ Receives south west monsoon earliest in the country.
➢ Both Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal branch of monsoon
give moderate rainfall
➢ Start of agricultural year with sowing of Kharif crops
Winter Season
➢ Mid- November to end of February
➢ Mean temperature - below 21°C
➢ Temperature may go below freezing point sometime
➢ Reasons for excessive cold :
○ Away from sea
○ Cold winds from Caspian sea and Turkmenistan
➢ Western disturbance: weak temperate cyclones originating in the Mediterranean sea that cause rainfall in Punjab in winters. It is highly beneficial for Rabi crops
Autumn Season
➢ Gradual change in weather after the withdrawal of Monsoon in September that continues till mid November.
➢ Day temperature is high and night becomes pleasant
Spring Season
➢ Advent of march
➢ Temperature rises abruptly
