➢ The Anglo-Sikh wars were a series of 1840s conflicts between the British East India Trading Company and the Sikh Empire.
➢ There were two Anglo–Sikh wars:
○ The First Anglo-Sikh War (1845–46)
○ The Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848–49)

➢ Maharaja Dalip Singh was the ruler of Punjab.

Treaty of Lahore (9 March 1846)
➢ Maharaja Duleep Singh, who was the ruler of Punjab was to remain its ruler
➢ Sikhs lost Jammu, Kashmir, Hazara and some territories in Jalandhar Doab.
➢ Rs. 1.5 Crore was paid to the British as war indemnity.
➢ The Sikhs were to limit their army to a certain number.
➢ Also, a British Resident, Sir Henry Lawrence was appointed to the Sikh court.

Aftermath
➢ 29 March 1849:
○ Lord Dalhousie made a proclamation by which Punjab was annexed
○ Annual pension was fixed for Maharaja Dalip Singh
➢ 5 April 1849: Punjab ended as a sovereign state.
