Important National and International Days May- 2018

Workers’ Day (International Labour Day) : 01 May
  • It is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement which occurs every year on May Day (1 May), an ancient European spring festival.
  • On this day, labour unions throughout the world celebrate and organize seminars, rallies and           parades.
  • Theme 2018 : "Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement"



 Press Freedom Day: 03 May

  • World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference.
  • 2018 Theme: "Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law".

World Asthma Day: 03 May

  •  World Asthma Day takes place on the first Tuesday of May.
  • World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.
  • Theme 2018 : "Never too early, never too late. It's always the right time to address airways disease"

World Red Cross Day: 08 May

  • The day is celebrated on this day because it marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, founder of the Red Cross and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
  • The day aims to pay tribute to the participants of the event and their contribution for helping people in need.
  • Theme 2018: “Memorable smiles from around the world”.

World Thalassemia Day: 09 May

  • The World Thalassaemia Day (WTD) is observed every year on May 8 to raise awareness about this deadly disease and the importance of blood donation. 
  • Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in the blood in which the body produces abnormally low Red Blood Cells (RBCs) which are the protein carriers. 
  • It disease causes a number of complications such as bone deformities, heart palpitations, jaundice and delayed puberty, etc.
  • Theme 2018 : "Thalassaemia past, present and future: Documenting progress and patients’ needs worldwide".

World Hypertension Day: 12 May

  • The WHD was first inaugurated in May 2005 and has become an annual event ever since. 
  • The purpose of the WHD is to promote public awareness of hypertension and to encourage citizens of all countries to prevent and control this silent killer, the modern epidemic.
  • Theme 2018 : "Know Your Numbers".

World Telecommunication Day: 17 May

  • World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on 17 May since 1969, marking the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. 
  • It is celebrated to raise the awareness about the importance of communication and how information travels across the world.
  • Theme 2018: "Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence for All".

National Anti-Terrorism Day: 21 May

  • Every year May 21 is being observed as Anti-Terrorism Day throughout India to spread awareness among the people about the danger of terrorism and violence.
  • The day marks the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who was assassinated at an election rally near Chennai by a suicide bomber from the LTTE on 21 May 1991.

World No-Tobacco Day (WNTD): 31 May 

  • In 1988, World Health Assembly of WHO had passed a resolution calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on May 31.
  • This day highlights the health risks associated with consumption all forms of tobacco and advocates for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
  • Theme 2018: “Tobacco and heart disease”.
