Gurmukhi Script

➢ Literal meaning : “From the mouth of Guru”.
➢ It was was developed from Sarada (script of the Brahmic family of scripts) by Guru Angad Dev Ji.
➢ The Gurmukhī alphabet contains thirty-five letters.
➢ The first three are distinct because they form the basis for vowels.
➢ In addition to these, there are six consonants created by placing a dot (bindi) at the foot (pair) of the consonant.
 Eg.:- © ਖ਼ ਗ਼ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ ਲ਼
➢Modern Gurmukhī has:
○ Thirty-eight consonants (akhar),
○ 10 vowel symbols (lāga mātrā),
○ two symbols for nasal sounds (bindi and ṭippī), and
○ one symbol which duplicates the sound of any consonant (addak).
➢ It played an important role in Sikhism.

Punjabi Language

➢ Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language.
➢ Indo-Aryan language spoken by over 100 million native speakers worldwide.
➢ It was introduced as an official language on 13 April 1968, under the Punjab Official Language Act, 1967.
➢ The word Punjabi has been derived from the word Panj-āb, Persian for "Five Waters", referring to the five major eastern tributaries of the Indus River.
➢ Punjabi has 3 dialects:
○ Eastern Punjabi
○ Western Punjabi
○ Pahari or Dogri

Eastern Punjabi

➢ Eastern Punjabi has four sub-dialects :
○ Majhi
○ Malvai
○ Doabi
○ Puadhi
1. Majhi (Standard Punjabi):
➢ Most important dialect.
➢ Also called “Taxali Boli”.
➢ Districts: Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran and Pathankot.

2. Malwai:
➢ Spoken in Malwa region.
➢ Districts:
○ Punjab: Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Bathinda Barnala, Sangrur, Mansa,Muktsar, Ludhiana, Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib
○ Haryana: Ambala, Hisar, Sirsa etc

3. Doabi
➢ Spoken in Doaba region (area falling between two regions : Beas and Satluj).
➢ Districts: Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Nawanshahr.

3. Puadhi
➢ Powadha is a region of Punjab and parts of Haryana between the Satluj and Ghaggar rivers
➢ Spoken in areas lying in south, southeast and eastern Punjab
➢ Main areas: Kharar, Kurali, Ropar, Nurpurbedi, Morinda,Patiala, Anandpur Sahib, Rajpura and Samrala.
