PM condoles the passing away of Shri Balramji Dass Tandon, the Governor of Chhattisgarh

  •  Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has condoled the passing away of Shri Balramji Dass Tandon, the Governor of Chhattisgarh. 
  • Shri Balramji Dass Tandon spent decades working for peace and progress in Punjab. 
  • Shri Balaramji Dass Tandon, one of the founder members of the Jansangh which later became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), became the governor of Chhattisgarh in July 2014.
  • He started his political career as Corporator of Amritsar Municipal Corporation in 1953 and went on to become deputy chief minister of Punjab. He held various portfolios in as a minister in the Punjab government.
  • He served as a minister for four times and was elected MLA seven times during his career. He was also jailed from 1975 to 1977 during Emergency.
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0
  • Under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) 2.0-a flagship program of MHRD, GOI 688 institutions are selected on a Challenge Mode (426 technical and 262 non- technical) which are reputed Higher Educational Institutes (both public and private) of the country, which have adopted total no. of 3555 villages for their development through UBA.
  • Also, scope for providing Subject Expert Groups assistance and Regional Coordinating Institutes to handhold and guide the participating institutions have been strengthened. 
  • IIT Delhi has been designated to function as the National Coordinating Institute for this program.
  • Large number of participating institutes have interacted with villagers, did village & household level surveys and prepared action plans. The challenges and issues have been identified through public participation. Now theses action plans have to be ratified by the Gram Sabhas to be organized on the occasion of Independence Day. IIT Delhi is also organizing 5 Gram Sabhas in its adopted village Panchayats.
Film festival held on theme of “Freedom Struggle and Freedom Fighters”
  • Films Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting hold film festival on occasion of 72nd Independence Day on the theme, “Freedom Struggle and Freedom Fighters”, on 15th August, 2018.
  • The festival was inaugurated by Smt. Rama Khandwala, nonagenarian freedom fighter and Indian National Army (INA) veteran.

  1. She  is a recipient of the prestigious National Tourism Award from the President of India, for the `Best Tourist Guide' in the year 2017. 
  2. Her daunting stamina stems from her early training as a recruit in Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army (INA). A Second Lieutenant belonging to the Rani Jhansi regiment in Rangoon in Burma, Smt. Khandwala spent her days marching, hoisting flags, learning how to wield a rifle, a bayonet and the Bren Machine Gun. 
  3. Khandwala's fluency in Japanese - a result of the Japanese occupation of Burma from 1942-1945 - helped her bond with tourists from Japan. Her language skills and interest in Buddhism even led her to meet the Dalai Lama and the King of Bhutan. 
  4. She met the former while working as an interpreter for a Japanese documentary and she accompanied the latter to Elephanta's Buddhist caves as a guide.
Film Actor Akshay Kumar Becomes Brand Ambassador for Road Safety Campaigns
  • Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Shri Nitin Gadkari today launched three short films for generating public awareness towards road safety. 
  • Film actor Shri Akshay Kumar has featured in these films, which are directed by Shri R.Balki. 
  • In a function attended by MoS Shri Mansukh L Mandavia in New Delhi, Shri Gadkari announced the appointment of Shri Akshay Kumar as Road Safety Brand Ambassador.
Australia recommences its adoption programme with India
  • The Government of Australia has decided to recommence the Adoption Programme with India, as per Hague Convention on Inter-Country Adoption. 
  • The adoptions from India had earlier been put on hold by the Government of Australia eight years ago, on the reported charges of trafficking of children for Inter-country adoption by some of the recognized Indian placement agencies.
  • The regulation of Inter-country adoptions have been made strict by the Government of India with the enactment of Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and notification of Adoption Regulations, 2017. 
  • The Ministry of Women & Child Development along with Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) have been constantly engaging with Australian Government for recommencement of the Adoption Programme.
NITI Aayog launches “Pitch to MOVE”
  • NITI Aayog has launched “Pitch to MOVE” - a mobility pitch competition that aims to provide budding entrepreneurs of India a unique opportunity to pitch their business ideas to a distinguished jury. 
  • Startups working in the various fields of mobility can pitch their ideas to industry leaders and Venture Capitalists for raising investments. Winners of the event will be felicitated by Hon’ble PM during the Global Mobility Summit.
  • About “Pitch to MOVE”:
  1. “Pitch to MOVE” is organised by NITI Aayog in collaboration with Invest India and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) as a part of a series of engaging featured events in the run up to the main event. 
  2. The Summit is scheduled to be held on 7th and 8th Sep 2018 at Vigyan Bhawan, in New Delhi and is being inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.
  3. The competition aims to identify and reward the start-ups offering innovative solutions for shared, connected, and environment friendly mobility. 
  4. The Startups can be from the domain of Public Mobility, Electric Vehicles, Shared Transport, Last Mile Connectivity, Passenger Transportation, Battery Technology, Automotive IoT, Freight & Logistics, Powertrain/Drivetrain, Experiential, Travel, Mobility Infrastructure and Automotive Electronics etc.
